The Science Behind MomSense
Polyvagal Theory
Polyvagal Theory- PVT is all about how our nervous system impacts our ability to connect with others. There are three states of our nervous system, controlled by the vagus nerve: Ventral, Sympathetic, and Dosal. Sympathetic is the frazzled, fight-or-flight state. Dorsal is the burnt-out, fried, and immobilized state. Ventral is that Goldilocks place in between where we are capable of social connection, productive, and in a safe place, both for ourselves and for others. At MomSense, we work with moms to get “more of the middle”, applying this scientific theory to show moms how to reset the nervous system. To learn more about PVT, read our MomSense blog post (link) or sign up for a MomSense course or coaching program that aligns with your stage of parenthood.
Social Connection
Connection is a proven necessity for healthy living. Research shows that increased social connection helps not only your mental and emotional health but also your physical health. Social connection impacts physiologic responses such as blood pressure and inflammation. Even “micro connections”, quick interactions like smiling at another parent at the playground or small talk with the staff at your local cafe, can boost overall social connection.
Mental Health
The United States is failing mothers and their mental health needs. 1 in 5 mothers experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety within the first 12 months after childbirth. And it’s not just limited to after a baby arrives, perinatal mood dysfunction can affect women throughout pregnancy and after birth. At MomSense we work with moms and their supporters to ensure families are set up to create environments that reduce risk for perinatal mood disorders, but also to identify the signs that mom needs professional help from a qualified healthcare provider.
